Cockermouth School: ESFA 16-19 Tuition Fund Statement

The fund provides additional funding for Cockermouth School to help with the disruption to learning caused by coronavirus (COVID-19). It’s for small group tuition in English, maths and other subjects that have been disrupted, including vocational and/or academic learning.

How will Cockermouth School use this funding?

  • The Tuition Fund will be used primarily to provide small group and/or individual tuition for our Year 12 and 13 students.
  • The fund will be used to provide tuition support above and beyond our usual programme of study.
  • We will use the allocated funding for small group or individual tuition (prioritising English and Mathematics) depending on the needs of the identified students. The Fund is not limited to supporting GCSE Maths and English and may be used to support other areas in the young person’s programme of study.
  • All of the students on our Sixth Form programme of study have achieved at least a grade 4. We will therefore prioritise those students that do have a grade 4 or above in English and/or maths, but are from an economically disadvantaged background and would need catch-up support. These students are defined as students from the 27% most economically deprived areas of the country based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation.
  • We will also provide tuition on the basis of a student not having received a grade 5 in mathematics and/or English.
  • Support will also be provided to students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), particularly where they have experienced additional disruption caused by the pandemic. It may be used to support students in preparing for adulthood or in supporting them to make a successful transition to a post-18 destination.
  • We will identify eligible students on our census.

How will the tuition be delivered?

  • Tuition and support will be provided according to an individual student’s needs, identified by subject staff or the Sixth Form team, and may be provided either through face-to-face or online tuition.
  • Tuition may take place either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups of no more than five students.
  • Subject specific tuition will be delivered by Cockermouth School staff, or approved external tutors.
  • Additional support may include academic or pastoral mentoring.

Measuring impact

  • We will measure the impact of any tutoring through progress and academic data, alongside ensuring that students are appropriately prepared for their post-18 destinations.
