Cockermouth School Library

In our Library, we encourage the love of reading and a positive attitude towards books, whether for pleasure or for study. Our stock of books caters for many different tastes and interests and we aim to help students become life-long learners by supporting independent learning.

The Library caters for all academic subjects taught in school and lots of the many leisure interest our students have. All levels of ability and different types of learners are supported; to that end Library staff are on hand all day, every day, to help students and staff with queries and to recommend titles.

As well as being open every day we also actively promote reading by organising events such as author visits, competitions, a book club, book fairs and opportunities to buy books; we celebrate World Book Day annually and follow Spellbinding, the Cumbrian Schools’ Book Award every year.

The Library offers not just a resource collection but a central area in school for study during lesson times and relaxation space at lunchtimes and after school. Quiet independent study is encouraged but the Library is also regularly used as a teaching space for library and information skills. Computers are accessible during lesson times and 6th formers are welcome to use the facilities during their study periods as well as after school for private study.

Soon we hope to have here lists of suggested reading for different year groups; in the meantime, just ask in the Library and we’ll be happy to suggest something you’ll enjoy.

“[A library] isn’t just a library. It is a space ship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the Universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future, a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you–and most of all, a gateway, to a better and happier and more useful life.” - Isaac Asimov
