Our U16 girls’ football team travelled to Sheepmount, Carlisle, to face Trinity School in the County Cup Final this week. If you thought the PSG vs Bayern match was entertaining, this game certainly matched it for drama and quality.
Trinity entered the fixture as clear favourites, having won the County Cup for the past four years and previously secured a national title at lower school level. However, our team embraced their underdog status and made a stunning start.
Cockermouth took the lead through Ruby S, whose attempted cross from the right wing deceived the goalkeeper and flew into the top corner, leaving the crowd stunned. Soon after, another attack down the right utilised Ruby’s pace, and although her initial shot was blocked, she reacted quickly to pull the ball back for Izzy W to finish confidently, giving us a 2–0 advantage.
Trinity responded before half-time, showing their quality by pulling a goal back despite an outstanding performance in goal from Poppy S. The ball eventually found its way in, leaving the score at 2–1 going into the break.
At half-time, Mr Charters delivered a calm and encouraging team talk, reinforcing tactical discipline and belief. Trinity came out strongly in the second half and equalised with a superb looping effort into the top corner—an excellent strike worthy of any final. With momentum shifting, our players showed resilience under sustained pressure; Honey W, and Lucy W (Captain) shone in defence. Their determination was rewarded when Amber R produced a moment of brilliance, striking first-time from 25 yards with a curling shot which clipped the underside of the bar to restore our lead at 3–2.
As the game wore on, fatigue and injuries began to take their toll, and Trinity’s fitness and depth proved decisive. They capitalised with three quick goals, including an exceptional long-range effort from distance, to take control of the match.
Our player of the game went to Honey W. Honey played at right back and has been a utility player this season, playing as a full-back, centre-back and winger. Her pace and attacking and defensive endeavour was a real asset for the team.
Despite the final score of 5–3, the game was widely recognised by officials from the Cumbria Schools FA and Trinity staff as a fantastic contest—truly worthy of a cup final. Both teams played in an excellent spirit, demonstrating sportsmanship throughout.
Our players should be incredibly proud of their performance. They were outstanding ambassadors for Cockermouth School and represented the school with great determination, skill, and character. Please join us in congratulating them on their efforts
