Psychology

Psychology at Cockermouth School aims to promote the academic skills and integrity valued by Higher Education and employers, alongside stimulating the natural curiosity which students often have with regard to understanding human behaviour. It is a fascinating subject that fosters an enquiring mind, independence of thought and an openness to challenge. Respect, acceptance and a willingness to reflect on preconceived beliefs are key messages. The theme of the scientific process and research methods runs through the very core of the course to equip students with a framework from which to critically assess the validity of research. The applications of psychological research in the real world are examined, for example obedience to authority theory is applied to the Nazi Holocaust.

Key Stage 5

A Level Psychology is offered as a preference at Key Stage 5 and students follow the AQA specification. Students use group discussion and activities to explore questions such as:

  • Are we born the way we are, or do our life experiences and circumstances shape us?
  • Why do some people obey authority when they know it will harm others?
  • Is memory reliable and why do we forget things?

They will also develop skills and knowledge in the areas of social influence, memory, attachment, psychopathology, biopsychology and research methods. The final elements of the course cover issues and options in psychology, including issues and debates in psychology, relationships, schizophrenia and aggression.
