Cockermouth School Council

At Cockermouth School, we believe that students should be given a wide range of opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills in preparation for life beyond school. The students involved this year have enjoyed working with the Centre for Leadership Performance (CforLP) to develop their leadership skills.

Our school council is made up of 52 students from years 7–12 and provides a meaningful way in which students can voice their opinions and have their views considered in decisions that impact them. Members are trying new things, finding solutions, and embracing their responsibilities.

We have four main areas of focus: community, wellbeing, teaching and learning, and sustainability, with students choosing which projects they wish to be involved with. This year, we have worked with many local organisations to strengthen our community links. Students have been inspired by Amy Way from Anotherway, Cockermouth CAN, and Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC) to develop our outdoor spaces campaign.

We meet weekly and spend our time beyond that working on our specific projects. We are delighted to share our first newsletter with you, which gives you a taste of some of the work we have undertaken. Compiled and designed by the students, edited by Daisy Smith, year 9.
