Cockermouth School is proud to have been involved in the production of a promotional video for the NHS School Food Resource, an important initiative designed to support schools in creating healthy, safe and positive food environments for young people.

As part of the video, Year 11 students Daisy and Blake shared thoughtful reflections on the importance of developing a positive relationship with food. They also highlighted how valuable it is for students to have access to guidance that helps them recognise, understand and respond to eating disorders.

Mr Milledge, Deputy Headteacher and Safeguarding Lead, also contributed to the video, explaining how Cockermouth School supports students who may be experiencing disordered eating. He outlined the school’s commitment to safeguarding, early support and the provision of high-quality meals served in a calm, welcoming and positive dining environment.

Filming took place during lunchtime in the school dining hall, capturing students enjoying their meals together and reflecting the inclusive and supportive culture around food at Cockermouth School.

The School Food Resource is a practical guide developed in consultation with Eating Disorder Champions within the North East and Yorkshire (NEY) Regional Mental Health Team, alongside specialists in eating disorders, education and mental health. Its aim is to support school staff in providing a healthy and safe environment for all students to eat during the school day.

The resource recognises that eating regular, nourishing food throughout the day is vital for students’ physical health, mental wellbeing and ability to learn. Eating Disorder Champions have reported many instances of young people struggling to eat at school, and this guide is designed to help schools better understand the reasons behind this, while offering clear, practical advice on how to support students effectively.
